The secular push back

July 27, 2011

The other day I went by the Jerusalem branch of the tent movement currently exciting the Israeli scene. The center of the movement is in Tel Aviv, but a group of young Jerusalemites have been part of it since Day One. I asked the young women there that afternoon what wold need to happen for them to pack up and leave with the feeling they’d accomplished their goals, and to my surprise they had a short list of concrete government decisions they were demanding, no more and no less. somewhat surprised, I commented that their Tel Aviv comrades seemed to have a much wider and woollier agenda. Yes, they said, that’s probably true. We’ve been working on this for two years, and we know what we want and how to get it. As I sat there a mid-level official from the Jerusalem municipality called the cellphone of one of the¬†demonstrators, and they chatted about coordinating an event scheduled for the next day.

Here’s a blogpost about these energetic mostly secular young Jerusalemites; I recommend the film trailer embedded in it.
